Must be a coincidence

Family Watchdog’s Google Maps hack shows you the bad apples. The red squares indicate convictions for offenses against children. I know you’d have to try pretty hard to not live or work somewhere relatively near a school in this town, but this seems like an alcoholic renting an apartment above a saloon.

Color psychology

For many of my childhood years, the walls in my room were painted fairly bright yellow - which maybe wasn’t such a great thing:
Like the sun, too much bright yellow hurts our eyes and agitates us. Brilliant yellows make our eyes tired. Therefore, like road workers use yellow flags for caution, you want to use [...]

Rebranding complete

Technical Video Rental is now SmartFlix:

Much better name, but still the same great company.

If it didn’t already exist

TJIC would have to create it: The Burrito Blog.

The dangers of attending nostalgia acts

Roving archenemy field correspondent SBL reports a confrontation with mortality to archenemy HQ’s answering machine:
Dude, I’m calling you from the front row of the Buzzcocks show. We’re in between bands. Just thought I’d call and share with you the very hystrical news: I’m like right up against the stage and there are these two chicks [...]

More annoyance

This is about the fourth day - not in a row, thankfully - I’ve had what seems like Verizon’s entire fleet of trucks noisily idling, moving forward, and backing up (beep! beep! beep!) outside my “office” window. Yes, I’m looking forward to giving their FiOS service a shot, but if the truck’s just going to [...]

Unattractive choices

For three days now a couple of trucks worth of Verizon guys have been making a huge racket outside my window. Yesterday they even had a cop* there collecting overtime pay for standing around chit-chatting (he’s conspicuously absent today, which casts a little suspicion on the necessity of the important work he was doing yesterday). [...]

Fast-moving clouds

In the time it took to take two pictures…

“Mexican strategy” offsite

Because everyone needs a Mexican Strategy. Oh yes.

Since discussions were inconclusive, I imagine we’ll be re-convening for another stab at a strategy sometime soon.

Google Murder Hack

Discovered while doing some research today: the above morbid google hack, that the Boston Police Department has a blog, and that some cops ride segways and wear bicycle helmets.

I love the smell of competition in the morning

I’m assuming this is part of the FiOS rollout.

Extremist minority at Harvard?

Amid rumors that Summers will resign before next tuesday’s faculty meeting (at which another no-confidence vote is possible), The Crimson reports:
While disaffection with Summers has been widespread throughout the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, leaders of several other schools are expressing their admiration for the embattled president.
Wait… there’s more to Harvard than the FAS?
Althsuler, the [...]

Cold turkey

Unsubbed from The List yesterday, apparently just in time to miss this. Ah, well.
It’s a little early to recommend it to other “users” who might be worried about withdrawal symptoms - I’ve already started to experience mood swings (though mostly towards a lighthearted optimism), but no shakes or sweats yet. We’ll see how it goes.

Wow

Thunder and lightning in a snow storm. Pretty cool. I’m going out to shovel. If I’m not back in an hour, send out a search party.
;-)
UPDATE: I lived. And I used a plastic shovel.
Another UPDATE: Went to a gas station (after it closed) to fill up one of my tires, found a cell phone in [...]

That’s more like it

Better than that other test.

RCN speeds

Better than yesterday… or is it? It’s only been a couple of minutes since installation, but I get significantly different speeds every time I take a measurement - some down in the DSL range.

Comcast speeds

Tomorrow: RCN.

Excellent goings on in the ‘hood

Piper at the gates of… noon?
(a quick shoutout to the two tjicistani non-agression pact signatories present, whom the guy with the flip-flops, horrible bed-head and camera pretended not to know while the congregration milled around outside… you’re welcome!)

Strange goings on in the ‘hood

1. First, rake the leaves away from three storm drains (observed but not pictured).
2. Open hydrant, then sit in your truck while hundreds/ thousands of gallons of water empty into storm drains.

3. Close the hydrant.

4. Be sure to look less than thrilled at the prospect having your odd shennanigans recorded for posterity.

5. “Too much water” [...]

Mass murder and arithmetic

I’m posting this a little late, but - on the Arlington List, the “Co-Leader of MoveOnArlington”, wrote:
MoveOn.org is planning vigils all over the country when we top 2,000 Americans killed in Iraq. As of this morning, 1,992 American soldiers had tragically died.
On the date we learn about the 2,000th death, if we hear before 3:00 [...]
