This, from MIT’s Media Lab, looks to be very cool:
Ambient Addition is a Walkman with binaural microphones. A tiny Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chip analyzes the microphone’s sound and superimposes a layer of harmony and rhythm on top of the listener’s world. In the new context, some surprising behaviors take place. Listeners tend to play [...]

There’s a nice hi-def trailer for 300 out.

Oil & Gold is one of my 10 favorite albums.

Technical Video Rental is now SmartFlix:
Much better name, but still the same great company.

Check out the visually stunning trailer for Frank Miller’s 300.
I continue to be fascinated by the art of movie trailers. This one IS the movie, about as condensed as possible. In what felt like 20 seconds (I didn’t actually time it) it tells you everything you need to know right up front: that they’re going [...]

I was still a bit under the weather last night so I didn’t go out to see the Non-event Alog (if you’ve got flash you can listen to some of their music, and check out the great video I lifted the above screencaps from) and Red Horse show. Also, Susanna supplies a podcast featuring some [...]

A dead mailing list twitches:
Hi folks,
Finally, after much effort, I have regained the rights to Mulberry and am making it available for free as of today. See:
http://www.mulberrymail.com
Some things to note:
It is free to anyone - no registration codes needed.
A new v4.0.5 version is available on the website. This simply removes the registration requirement and updates [...]
If you didn’t get your cold war military architecture fix from last week’s Swiss bunkers post, feast your eyes on this Soviet submarine base.

The success of My emotional life is the World’s responsibility. If I don’t have a good time, the World is evil and guilty. More precisely, it is mean i.e. hostile. Let me call this the Basic Rule of the ethics of the religion of women.
Here we can see why anthropomorphizing [...]
Underdog is here. Or will be, next year.
Underdog was a local product, too. Who knew?
(Whoops. Rhyming completely unintentional)
*Actually, I’m very afraid.
Jim Martin and John Paul’s Legacy:
I agree that John Paul II was far from perfect but I disagree with some of the reasons Fr. Jim lists as evidence of that. One of them jumped off the page at me. Fr. Jim wrote the following:
“John Paul, though a prayerful man of unshakeable faith, was not perfect [...]
It keeps getting better and better. Not only did al-Zarqawi survive having two 500 lb bombs dropped on him long enough to realize we got him, but an unnamed witness claims he lived long enough for US soldiers to beat the shit out of him:
The witness, who lived near the scene of the bombing, claimed [...]
You can listen to Natural VLF Radio Phenomena here. Wacky.

I’ll read my way though these.
The other night I sat through that really, really (really!) bad Star Wars movie. Watching Cgi-Wan Kenobi ride around on that iguana-with-feathers thing, it struck me that it’s about time for someone with a little talent to make a good ERB movie.

If TJIC hasn’t been providing you with your USRDA of Doctorow-mocking lately, well… revitalize yourself:
(SCENE: a strip mall Radio Shack with a single Radio Shack EMPLOYEE standing behind the sales counter. CORY DOCTOROW enters.)
SFX: electronic doorbell goes “Dooo-weee!”
CORY DOCTOROW: Hmmph. I certainly hope that doorbell isn’t keeping private records of who enters and exits the [...]
Because everyone needs a Mexican Strategy. Oh yes.
Since discussions were inconclusive, I imagine we’ll be re-convening for another stab at a strategy sometime soon.

Last night, almost a year after the last time I made it out to absorb some local culture, CK, JMD & I (no TJICisphereans expressed interest) wandered over to PA’s Lounge for the first “Uppercase Sound” event (since people actually attended, apparently there will be an Uppercase Sound #2). On the bill were Rise|Set|Twilight, Asher, [...]
