I’m so sick of books, movies, whatever, with titles of this format. Maybe I should write a book, and title it Gerund Noun.

Janek Schaefer performances
English sound artist / composer Janek Schaefer offers downloadable MP3s of two of his performances for sale: the recent The Sporting Guide to The Speed of Sound and the slightly older Recital in the old library. I’m not much for writing music reviews, but this guy got to attend the performance of TSGTTSOS and had [...]
Balinese Gamelan
Cool:
A gamelan is a kind of musical ensemble of Indonesia typically featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings, and vocalists may also be included. The term refers more to the set of instruments than the players of those instruments. A gamelan as a set [...]
Inky comic goodness
Thoughts on some comics:
I noticed Becky Cloonan’s work a while back, while trawling around on DeviantArt. It took some hunting, but I eventually found myself a copy of East Coast Rising - her story about pirates off the Jersey shore after the sea level has risen enough to drown most of what is currently coastal [...]
A man after my own heart
Journalista’s Dirk Deppy interviewed:
What really makes me want to die? The way industry true-believers assume that comics not featuring capes and tights are seen as diversions that “hurt comics,” and that different and conflicting senses of aesthetics are some sort of personal attack. I realize that this contradicts the nonchalance that I affected in the [...]
I’ll force you to obediance you rebellious slut
While googling for magnifying glass graphics, I stumbled across this (I edited the image above a bit so when I shrunk it to fit the subjects weren’t as small as they’d otherwise have been). I find it hilarious that someone at the Yale Library decided to use such an un-PC image as an example in [...]
The past is another country
…and while you wouldn’t want to live there, you might want to check it out via the excellent “Shorpy - the 100 year old photoblog“.
“Letters are things, not pictures of things”
Man, that’s some beautiful type!
My typography prof worked for a company (boutique might be a better word) that did very cool limited edition books on letterpress. I disagree with Kristensen - I don’t think this sort of thing is going away, no matter how good digital delivery of large amounts of text gets.
(TJIC, we should [...]
Balkanize You
YouTube user xavierXreivax creates cool music videos from spooky tunes I happen to like, and well-chosen visual materials:
This is part 2-It looks at various types of world propaganda throughout the 20th century moving beyond the historical context to examine the malleability of the word “free”. Original Music Video With Tim Hecker.
Coincidentally, I just stumbled on [...]
FM3
FM3, makers of the Buddha Machine, live in Berlin.
I found a bunch of Buddha Boxing (
Q: What is Buddha Boxing?
A: Buddha Boxing is the live set we are touring in 2006. It’s essentially a “sound game” played with Buddha Machines. No PA, No mixer, No stage, No lighting. A simple, go anywhere performance concept.
Q: How [...]
Tim Hecker live
Not much to look at, but sounds nice.
Scary heavy metal guys ISIS filtered by Hecker.
Appreciation is nice
Lileks @ SmartFlix blog:
I knew the very second I opened the attractive SmartFlix envelope (much better than Netflix, to be honest, and it doesn’t stand out with that red STEAL ME, POSTAL EMPLOYEE color) that this would be the most awesome training film ever.
(emphasis added)
“w00t!”, as the kiddies say.
Is nothing sacred?
From my favorite photo-blogger, 12 months (or more) in the middle kingdom:
That iconic beverage that you either love or hate is as much a part of life in China as it is in any other country - These bottles although small 250mls are very cheap for the size they cost around 1 Yuan (plus another [...]
Straight outta (east) London
DJ Cockney:
I also have a music video coming out which the record company has called “Cained”. This is a compilation of Chill music from my vast collection. I have to confess that I am a secret disc jockey and have been making tapes and CDs for myself and my friends for over 40 years.
My record [...]
Caught my ear
Heard on RF: Kanding Ray.
You can hear four tunes on their myspace page. Perhaps co-blogger JMD can pick up the CD for me on his next excursion to the Fatherland?
Barsoom time
The other night I sat through that really, really (really!) bad Star Wars movie. Watching Cgi-Wan Kenobi ride around on that iguana-with-feathers thing, it struck me that it’s about time for someone with a little talent to make a good ERB movie.
