In an (unsolicited) letter, John McCain writes:
I have always considered service to my country the greatest duty and highest honor. [...] For some time now I have said that I would make a decision about whether or not (sic) to run for President of the United States and actively compete in the 2008 campaign after the completion of the mid-term election.
It is another call of duty to which I feel I must acknowledge.
That is why I am pleased to announce that I have made my decision to seek the Republican nomination for the office of the President of the United States.
Today I am inviting you to be among the first to join my campaign as part of my core group of supporters committed to helping me win the Republican Presidential nomination.
For me to have the slightest chance of success in what is sure to be a hard fought contest, my campaign must have strong, solid backing from voters all across America.
That is why I am reaching out to friends like you with a personal (sic) request to sign and return the enclosed PRESIDENTIAL PLEDGE OF SUPPORT.
Um, no.
