I ordered a new PC from PCs For Everyone a little while ago. They used to be based in Cambridge, and I always found them to be excellent. I just picked the thing up from their production facility in Norwood, and found that they’d left a bunch of stuff out of my order. They’re overnighting the components to me at no charge, since I figured the fastest way to a resolution was to stick them in myself, but one of the reasons I didn’t buy this thing piecemeal was that I wanted to avoid that sort of hassle this time.
Sigh.
Well, I’m sure google knows how to install a SATA drive.

I always thought they were a bit overpriced, but were worth it for you since you frequently went to Cambridge to get advice and help from their staff. Now it seems like its time to find a new supplier. Being a laptop guy myself means I don’t have that problem. I was thinking of getting a Mac Mini or something for the home office to play with OS X and not get involved with Vista.
Yeah, one of the good things about them is that they were local, so if something had to be returned or replaced, there was no messing around with shipping and long wait-times. As it happens, it doesn’t take much longer to get to Norwood than it did to get to Cambridge (!!), so I think the convenience factor still applies. Anyway, this is just one fuckup in six years of service, and they dealt with it very nicely, so I’m inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt. If it happens again, then action will be warranted.
And yes, I’d like to avoid getting involved with Vista, too, so when the time comes I may switch to Mac - but the notion of buying new software isn’t one that makes me happy. Hopefully I’ll be good with XP and 4GB RAM for a couple of years, though (the only thing about Vista I care about is that it supports up to 32GB of RAM).
I’ve got a E6400 Core 2 Duo, 4GB of DDR2 800mhz ram, and two 320 GB Sata II drives in a box I put together myself and a 24″ iMac E6400 Core 2 Duo, 2GB of ~500mhz DDR2 and a 300 GB Sata drive with an external 350GB USB drive. Despite the Mac being “slower”, I love it, and I’m not going PC again despite the cheaper/self buildable hardware. I’d rather pay twice as much for Mac polish. Just my two ยข.
Thanks, Ray - The opinion of someone with both platforms is much more meaningful than the usual evangelizing… it’s sounding more and more like the way to go. But given the hit to my wallet that will be involved, I’ll be waiting until this box I just got is a little more obsolete.
