A man’s gotta know his limitations

ngrvnd, having read about the Ambient Addition in an earlier post, asks:
You wanna build one?
Having taken a good, hard look at myself, my answer is:
No.
But I’ll happily sit by and look over your shoulder while you build one. And I’ll bring the beer.

Well, the first sentence was pretty good…

The NYT, on immigration:
Our Founding Illegals
By WILLIAM HOGELAND
Published: December 27, 2006
EVERY nation is a nation of immigrants.

I’m with you so far, William!
Go back far enough and you’ll find us all, millions of potential lives, tucked in the DNA of our African mother, Lucy.
BZZZZZT! No, sorry! The correct answer was “Eve”.
Thanks for playing, though.

Mugabe and me

China denies $2 billion negotiations with Zimbabwe:
Zimbabwe was set to receive a $2-billion loan from China; Zimbabwe’s government owned daily, The Herald, reported last week. However, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson has refuted allegations that negotiations to this effect are taking place.

Norin Radd

Although I didn’t much like the first one (it didn’t have much to recommend it besides special effects*), I’m hoping one can’t go wrong with Galactus.
* I know, I know. But still.

Victorian England in color, etc.

Lots of cool stuff at old-pictures.com, including daguerreotypes.

This one makes me think the story was mis-named: clearly, the Devil is Daniel Webster. Yikes!

A device to get you (well, me) to leave the house

This, from MIT’s Media Lab, looks to be very cool:
Ambient Addition is a Walkman with binaural microphones. A tiny Digital Signal Processing (DSP) chip analyzes the microphone’s sound and superimposes a layer of harmony and rhythm on top of the listener’s world. In the new context, some surprising behaviors take place. Listeners tend to play [...]

My Fun

If, like me, you’ve got a jones for the drones, check out My Fun’s Idyll EP - you can download all four songs, for free.
Susanna says:
My Fun is the slightly eccentric nom de guerre of Justin Hardison, a musician, who uses field recordings, lush electronics and samples to make quite lovely, if also quite bittersweet [...]

Her Hitler hairdo is making me feel ill

Radiodread, via the The Mind That Brought You Nothing Else - who’s managed five posts in ‘06, and thus won’t be issuing any refunds (see blogroll on right).

No Mr. Bond, I expect you to fly

Holy shit!

Senator Incitatus (D, MA)

Roman emperor Caligula wanted to make his favorite horse a consul, I suspect for two reasons: first, to indicate his lack of respect for Roman officialdom, and second, to indicate that he was totally bug-fuck crazy. From VDH’s Works and Days:
Does running for President allow a candidate to freelance at a time of war by [...]

Give them nothing, but take from them - everything

There’s a nice hi-def trailer for 300 out.

Three months without punching anyone in the head

This is interesting:
Research with British and US offenders suggests nutritional deficiencies may play a key role in aggressive bevaviour [...] The study is investigating the effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplements on the brain, and the pills that have effected Demar’s “miracle” are doses of fish oil.
The results emerging from [...]

Still worthy, but more of a Liberal rag every week

(Clearing out some older unfinished posts)
The economist blogs about the Lancet study:
The reaction to the study has been reliably partisan.
So, people who put a little effort into staying somewhat reliably informed about what’s going on fail to let propaganda from a bunch of nutjobs (nutjobs far more partisan than the majority of people they hope [...]

His Armed Forces-modernizing technique is* unstoppable

(Clearing out some older unfinished posts)
If memory serves, Grand Master Cheney had only ten ways to kill you… Tremble in fear, enemies of a nimble, 21st century US military!
* even though he’s shamefully been thrown under the bus by the craven Bush administration, my impression is that he pretty much succeeded in reaching his goal [...]

High art and misdemeanors

The new Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston will welcome visitors with a mural of a woman breaking wind:
The Divine Gas, Aoshima’s work for the ICA, depicts a giant girl lying in a lush landscape. The setting seems idyllic and serene-butterflies flutter, a deer nestles near her foot, a couple frolics hand-in-hand. Meanwhile, a [...]

Not to sound like a fanboy, but…

Paul Pope has joined the blogosphere. Very cool!
(He’s got a Flickr account, too, which made me wonder - do Flickr photostreams have RSS feeds you can sub to? Why, yes - they do.)

Manga Studio rules

I did some quick tracings of Russian (or maybe Ukrainian?) fashion models in my efforts to familiarize myself with Manga Studio. It’s really an outstanding piece of software.
More to come sometime soon.
