NPR needs better screening of its guests

Was listening to NPR in the car yesterday and the had a climatologist/meteorologist on to discuss the recent weather and the discussion turned to the upcoming hurricane season. I’m paraphrasing here, but it went like something like this:

Host: The hurricanes have become more severe in the last few years. Is this because of human induced global warming?

Guest: Actually my research shows that there has been no increase in the stregnth of hurricanes since the 40’s when data started to be seriously collected.

Host: But we’re having more hurricanes- certainly thats caused buy human induced global warming.

Guest: Well, there has been an increase in recorded hurricanes since the 50’s, but thats due more to improved monitoring technology than an increase in storm activity.

Host: But surely the increase in ocean temperature, especially in the Atlantic, is causing more and stronger hurricanes.

Guest: Warm water is a component of hurrican formation. However our research shows that warm water is actually a detriment to the development of wind sheer which is required for a hurricane to form. I would estimate that its pretty much a wash.

Host: Lets move on……

Poor guy- he’ll never be asked back with an attitude like that.
