Old school

During some down time over the weekend I was wondering about the origins of the song When Johnny Comes Marching Home, and learned the tune was lifted from an Irish folksong called Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye (same link, just scroll down a bit), first published around the same time as WJCMH (after the Civil [...]

Maybe the pendulum is swinging the other way

People seem pretty unhappy with the police state in Iran.

Presented without comment

The Secret Wars Re-enactment Society.
(but categorized correctly)

Flood

Another cool google hack:

Apologies if this has already been noted in the TJICisphere - can’t remember where I found it, but remember vaguely having wanted to blog it.

Do NOT watch that Spongebob Squarepants movie

You’ll never get that damn song out of your head.

Don’t tell the North American BoBo

India says that poverty is a more pressing problem than climate:
India said on Tuesday that poor nations had to give priority to ending poverty rather than fighting global warming at 189-nation U.N. climate talks criticized by environmentalists as a rambling talk shop.
Nations from Papua New Guinea to Iceland gave speeches during a novel two-day U.N. [...]

The spiral staircase of life?

This was nice to see:
This is doubly true in wartime. A war offers endless opportunity for a man growing weary of his mortal coil to be relieved of it without anyone (including himself) realizing the nature of his condition.
Someone who knows what mortal coil is! That little bit ‘o Shakespeare gets misused all the time.

The familiar hue and cry

…goes up anytime the US sends its armed forces somewhere, especially univited. But once US troops get where they’re going and get settled in, no one ever wants them to leave:
The U.S. is pulling almost all of its military forces out of Iceland. This is not exactly big news, except perhaps in Iceland itself, which [...]

This guy made a camera lens out of ice!

Your call is important to us, please continue to hold for the next available representative

RCN has had me on hold for about 40 minutes now, and I’m starting to feel like a sucker - they probably closed up shop at 5, and this fucking recording will keep lying to me until tomorrow morning. If I hadn’t already decided to dump their service, this would have persuaded me.
UPDATE: Well, I [...]

An EBay virgin no longer

I buy everything off the internet- clothes, shoes, electronics, computers, luggage- you name it. However, til today I have never bought anything off of ebay.
My purchase?
A vintage GEM Micromatic Razor
It will join a Schick Injector M1 in my battle with Gillette’s obscene prices and search for a perfect shave.
Talk about old school.

The Nuge

TJIC has a link to an interview with The Nuge. My favorite quote comes when he is discussing deer:
They’re only interested in three things: the best place to eat, having sex and how quickly they can run away. Much like the French.
I never get tired of mocking the French.

The kind of busybody BS I can do without

Jonah Goldberg is bothered by the fact that a private company isn’t doing enough to celebrate something he thinks is important. Goldberg is free to get his own damn website, and do whatever he likes with the logo on it, on any day he sees fit.
What a dingleberry.

Blistering barnacles!

This guy has identified all the cars portrayed in Herge’s Tintin.

NPR needs better screening of its guests

Was listening to NPR in the car yesterday and the had a climatologist/meteorologist on to discuss the recent weather and the discussion turned to the upcoming hurricane season. I’m paraphrasing here, but it went like something like this:
Host: The hurricanes have become more severe in the last few years. Is this because of human [...]

Fast-moving clouds

In the time it took to take two pictures…

“Mexican strategy” offsite

Because everyone needs a Mexican Strategy. Oh yes.

Since discussions were inconclusive, I imagine we’ll be re-convening for another stab at a strategy sometime soon.

VDH spanks MSM, NYT

Victor Davis Hanson reports on WWII as our present-day media would:
Yet even this government’s propaganda efforts ring hallow, as we noticed with the recently released film footage purportedly showing Adolph Hitler incompetently handling a Colt .45 revolver. In fact, such a weapon, little known in Germany, is hard to load and shoot, especially the early [...]

Feeling better

Last night I pulled up the wall to wall in my basement, removed the padding, washed everything with a bleach solution, put the rug down and set up fans and an industrial dehumidifier. If all goes well I can save the rug. I think that rug padding can hold more water than [...]

Note to self

If you meet Buzz Aldrin, DO NOT accuse him of not really going to the moon.
Hilarious! The slo-mo replay really makes it.
