The Luckiest Girl in the World breathlessly reports that
On Wednesday, I was at work when I got a call for a Neil Young session the next day. Needless to say, I was excited about it - Neil Young is one of my musical heroes. When my husband and I got to Capitol, we found 98 other singers, a collection of L.A.’s finest. All I knew was that we were singing on a new Neil Young record, but when the lyrics we were supposed to sing flashed on the giant screen, a roar went up from the choir. I’m not going to give the whole thing away, but the first line of one of the songs was “Let’s impeach the President for lyin’!” Turns out the whole thing is a classic beautiful protest record. The session was like being at a 12-hour peace rally. Every time new lyrics would come up on the screen, there were cheers, tears and applause. It was a spiritual experience. I can’t believe my good fortune at being a part of this.
which Editor & Publisher confirms:
rock star Neil Young is the son of a famed Canadian journalist, so it should not surprise many that he recently recorded a song in California with a very reportorial — or at least pundit — feel to it.
It’s called “Impeach the President,” so there can be little question what it is about.
(I’m glad they mentioned he was the son of a famed Canadian journalist, and that his song has a reportorial feel to it - though how the writer of the piece knows this is beyond me, as it looks as if the song is yet to be released and he doesn’t otherwise indicate that he’s actually heard it - because otherwise I might have come to the incorrect conclusion that he was just some asshat with a guitar, whose opinion meant no more than anyone else’s.)
Regarding all the comments that Alicia, the above-mentioned luckiest girl in the world, has apparently decided to delete because they were rude and disagreeable, she writes
I had no idea this would stir up such a brou-ha-ha! I was just telling the people who read my stuff and know that I’m a musician about something exciting that happened to me musically that had a political sidebar.
Yet the Neil Young post is the ONLY post on the page with politics relegated to a “sidebar”. ALL the other posts are full-on leftwing nuttery. But hey, whatever, we all write for ourselves and our audiences. The funny bit is that someone at Instapunk has written a wonderful parody already:
[...]
Let’s impeach the President
Let’s let Arabs spill their grief
In gore, blood shed
and severed heads.
Listen to the suicides
The poetry of dynamite
They only hate the cross and Jews
The rest of us are cool.
Listen to bin Laden’s tapes
He only wants to end the rape
of Islam’s precious sacred sites
And put to death those filthy kikes.
Let’s impeach the President
Let’s impeach the President
Let’s impeach the President
Bring back the wronged Saddam
Apologize to everyone
Submit to Allah and Islam.[...]
Down and down and down he comes
From Canada to save the dumb
Americans.
He’s Neil, the One.
His voice is like mosquito wings
It whines and weeps and always stings
Republicans.
He knows how all of us should be,
He always tells the truth in D.
I like Young’s music as much as the next guy - well, probably more - and will reserve judgement until the song is released, but I have to say it sounds almost as if he doesn’t care if there’s a free world to keep on rockin’ in.
Sorry. Couldn’t resist!
