Following up on that woman with balls:
Dr. Wafa Sultan is in hiding, fearful for her life and the safety of her family, after she lambasted the roots of radical Islam during a debate televised on Al-Jazeera last month.
Dr. Sultan is leading a struggle to create a new reality in the Islamic world, which she believes [...]
Annie Proulx, author of the short story that Larry McMurty adapted for the screen, whines:
The people connected with Brokeback Mountain, including me, hoped that, having been nominated for eight Academy awards, it would get Best Picture [...] We should have known conservative heffalump academy voters would have rather different ideas of what was stirring [...]
Chinese ambient band FM3 (American-born, expat musician Christiaan Virant, and Chinese keyboardist and computer musician Zhang Jian)’s recent release, according to this review:
is not a CD release, or even an LP release. It’s a small plastic box (that runs on two batteries) made in China that has not only an integrated speaker, but a volume [...]
I agree with what one commenter posted; I’d love to see esr say this to Clooney’s face:
Don’t bother telling me what I’m supposed to feel about Brokeback Mountain or what a philistine I am for dismissing it out of hand, or why it would be good for me to see it. That’s exactly my point; [...]
A quick summary of my shaving history:
1980: First shave with my father double edge safety razor. I was getting too much fuzz on my upper lip.
1981 - 90: Gillette Atra razor. $11.79 per 10 ($1.18/cart). While the military, I needed to shave 2x a day- I used a Panasonic Wet/Dry electric before [...]
The Doctor is coming to Scifi. I know some people hate it, but I always used to watch it on PBS Channel 44 as a kid and its one of my favorites. Even if the special effects suck. Even if the costumes suck. Even if the sonic screwdriver sucks.
Besides, I always [...]
As far as I can recall, I’ve only been to a movie theater 9 times in the 21st century. Seven of those times have been to see a movie that was part of a franchise (Harry Potter, X-men, Ghost in the Shell). I’m planning on seeing V for Vendetta on the release day, or close [...]
UPDATE: Well, it didn’t take NBC long to squash all the free marketing they were getting from this. Idiots.
What’s the holdup, here?

The Consumerist’s report of the new $10 bill gave me a chuckle this morning.
That said, US currency design is a lot less “gay” than most of what is out there. I would have to nominate the old dutch currency as the “gayest.” Not that there is anything wrong with that.
John Derbyshire provides ten reasons to burn postmodern philosphers alive atop piles of their books. Of course, for a lot of the guys he cites, it’s too late - but I’m all for digging ‘em up and doing our best, just for the catharsis of it.
Somebody’s favorite person is making an ass of himself again:
Cory Doctorow, technocrat extraordinaire over at Boing Boing, wants me to “Fight AOL/Yahoo’s email tax!” Well, I am fighting it, Cory! I’m fighting it by handling my own email and not letting some huge corporation handle my email for me.
…
On the other hand, the post office [...]
Victor Davis Hanson on his visit to Iraq:
Critics dub our military a “mercenary” force and sometimes call for renewal of the draft. But it is hardly a late-imperial Roman legion filled with foreigners and malcontents, but rather a true volunteer force, whose diversity in age, gender, race and religion would shame a university faculty or [...]
It was inevitable, of course.
