As several of the contributors to this blog know, I have a special relationship with Coelacanths due my legendary forray into interpretive dance to Shriekback’s song of the same name. The Observer has an article about how a bunch have been caught-”Dinosaur fish pushed to the brink by deep-sea trawlers“. Since they are my favorite fish, I rushed to the artlicle to see what i could do to save them. Actual data in the article summarized:
Over 6 months 20 have been caught by trawlers looking for shark.
We don’t know how many there are.
Their solution- stop the fishing and set up a government agency to try to figure out what is going on.
Just having read Michael Crighton’s speech, once again environmentalists are yanking our chain. It seems to me that my headline could be just as accurate.
Besides, I have to admit 65 million years is a pretty good run. We should do so well.
