So much for my meth lab

Vicks has apparently tossed its tried and true formula for NyQuil:

…Vicks has released new formulations of both NyQuil and DayQuil, removing the decongestant ingredient [pseudoephedrine - dff] from NyQuil entirely, and replacing it will a far less effective decongestant in DayQuil. They both contain an antihistamine called doxylamine succinate, but as far as my nose can tell, it’s not doing a damned thing.

I haven’t seen it happen around here, but apparently in some places products containing pseudoephedrine are popular enough among the intersection of the set of people who know a little chemistry and the set of people who just aren’t high enough that stores have to keep them locked up behind the counter. If this is actually the reason Vicks changed their formula, shame on them. I mean, I don’t think anyone buys the stuff for the taste… they buy it for its efficacy.

They just lost my business. I can’t imagine people are wasting their time making a $20 hit of meth with $300 worth of nyquil.

well, they steal the $300 worth of nyquil, so the economics aren’t quite what you’re suggesting (i’m not sure what the nyquil / meth ratio work out to in real life).

Neither do I (the economics thing). But there has been a lot of talk about Meth in New England recently. Finally I heard someone whe seemed informed about what is going on. It seems that the 14 “Meth Labs” raided in New England this year were making for personal use rather than distribution (in fact one of the “labs” was in the truck of a car…WTF). I think were are seeing some major scare tactics similar to the Crack craze 10 years ago as politicians and law enforcement look for bigger budgets. I would guess that most meth is made in large labs, using smuggled chemicals and distributed around the country rather than some dude distilling nyquil in the truck of his car. But I guess we have to protect the children….
Again, this is just all pulled out of my ass….
