I've sanded down walls with that kind of shit on them because I couldn't bring myself to demo the walls and have them sheetrocked. What the hell is wrong with people? Jeebus! However, although I don't really like it, painting is my least loathed home maintenance activity, so I can't totally get on board the # 6 bus.
