Hello, Potter…

WOW. Last year’s best selling book was The Da Vinci Code. I’m not sure how many copies it sold, but the new Harry Potter book is expected to outsell it in one day.

UPDATE: delivered this morning by a guy wearing (er, among other things) mailman shorts and driving around in a sedan, in an Amazon box custom printed with the HP logo and the words DO NOT DELIVER BEFORE AUGUST 16TH all over it.

It’s interesting to see that things with similar crap content rise to about the same level.

Have you even cracked the cover on either? Granted, both are fiction but I find the two of different caliber.

My feeling about TDVC was that I was just barely willing enough to put up with the terrible writing, plotting and characters to find up what little conspiratorial tidbits of fringy pseudo-fact would pop up next. I’d call it a light read, to damn it with the proverbial faint praise.

OTOH, I think the HP books are fairly well written and plotted, with fairly good characters, all of which works to create a certain ambiance which I like enough to keep me reading even though on the whole the enterprise seems somewhat lacking in sophistication… they seem almost like badly-written books for adults instead of well written books for kids, if you know what I mean. As if Rowling was shooting for better but missed. Regardless, I like ‘em. Worth the hype? I dunno. Probably not.
