The (Platonic) Ideal Tax Rate

Joe Klein in TIME magazine:

California’s perpetual fiscal crisis is unique—a consequence of the state’s artificially low property taxes, cemented in place by the infamous Proposition 13 passed in 1978—but most states are now being squeezed as the Federal Government cuts spending on everything from cops to Medicaid.

(emphasis added)

Oh, you selfish voters of California, who decline to bankroll the schemes of your betters! You’re the problem! Not the fact that your government is hostile to business, taxes anything that moves, and is apparently run by a bunch of drunken sailors.

BTW Joe, what’s the natural property tax rate?

In the state of nature, anyone who tries to implement a tax has a life that is nasty, brutish, and short.

At least if I get a say in the matter.
