NATICK, Mass. (AP) A man walking his dog on Saturday near Natick High School found a large vintage mortar round lying among the leaves.
The man stumbled across the nearly 2-foot-long mortar at about 3:50 p.m. lying near the entrance to a well-traveled path. Walkers regularly stroll on the path, and students use it to get to school, said Natick police Lt. Nick Mabardy.
A state police technician dated the mortar as manufactured sometime between World War I and World War II. The technician performed X-rays, found that it was solid, and deemed that it could be live. It was taken from the scene for disposal, Mabardy said.
