Tough luck for Colin Quinn

Well, this sucks. Quinn’s show was good, hopefully they won’t give it the axe. If they want higher ratings, they could try… I dunno… promoting it?

The Comedy Central late-night series “Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn” has likely reached the end of its run.

“Quinn” has been holding onto only about half of the audience tuning in to its 11 p.m. lead-in, “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” “Daily,” which is red-hot as of late, coming off a pair of Emmy wins and record ratings during the political conventions, has averaged 1.1 million total viewers this year through September 9, while “Quinn” has averaged 537,000 by the same measure.

Tthat article’s a month old, though. A more recent one measures red-hot a little differently:

COMEDY CENTRAL’s ‘DAILY SHOW’ has experienced surprise audience erosion — despite a publicity push by host Jon Stewart.

Stewart, who announced last week that he plans to support John Kerry, pulled 1,040,000 total viewers for the month of September — down 7% from August, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

Jumbo hype from media writers and a bestselling book apparently have failed to translate into any TV audience improvement.

Also featured is a transcipt excerpt from Stewart’s Crossfire appearance:

CARLSON: You had John Kerry on your show and you sniff his throne and you’re accusing us of partisan hackery?

STEWART: Absolutely.

CARLSON: …you have this marvelous opportunity not to be the guy’s butt boy, to go ahead and be his butt boy. Come on. It’s embarrassing.

STEWART: I was absolutely his butt boy. I was so far — you would not believe what he ate two weeks ago.

STEWART: You know, the interesting thing I have is, you have a responsibility to the public discourse, and you fail miserably.

CARLSON: You need to get a job at a journalism school, I think.

STEWART: You need to go to one.

Okay, so I’m a week or so late coming to this, but in the video clip that’s all over the net, Stewart supports his assertions (IIRC - I’m paraphrasing) that the Crossfire dudes have some responsibility to the public that he does not by pointing out that the Daily Show is a comedy program and that it follows a puppet show. The much-alluded-to-by-Stewart juvenile stonerhood of his audience exempts him from any responsiblity, it seems. So, why did Comedy Central take out a full page color ad in the New Yorker — when High Times seems more appropriate, at least according to Stewart? Stewart’s a typical liberal asshole, and losing viewers. But I bet he loves it when all the heavy hitters visit his set and admit they wish they could report the news like he does…

Hey Comedy Central - stop toadying up to the liberal media establishment and spend the bucks on Quinn, instead!

It’s fun to pretend more than four or five people read this blog! Wheeee!
